Abstract

Background: Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) primarily affects the elderly. MoH Indonesia (2021) reported the prevalence of knee OA among elderly population keeps increasing within last 5-years thus it needs an effective intervention on minimalizing its effects. Thus, managing effective intervention focusing on improving range of  motion (ROM) and muscle strength is crucial for elderly with knee OA. However, there were lacks on study which focusing about how exercise and physiotherapy modalities affecting ROM and muscle strength among elderly Objective: This study aimed at analysing the effectiveness of physiotherapy modalities and exercise towards ROM and muscle strength among elderly with knee OA. Methods: It is a quasi-experimental approach which
assess the efficacy of strengthening exercise and physiotherapy modalities in enhancing range of motion and muscular strength. This study had a total of 20 participants. Intervention was given for 8 session (1-month), while follow-up was monitored during baseline (T0) and after intervention given (T1). Purposive sampling was utilized in this study. Paired T-test were used to analyse each patients’ condition during pre-post test. Results: The paired t-test analysis on ROM and muscle strength were significant with p value were 0.015 and 0.011, respectively after given the intervention. Conclusion: It can be concluded that strengthening exercise and physiotherapy modalities can increase the ROM of joints and muscle strength in the elderly with Knee OA, and it is recommended for geriatric management policy on including the exercise program and physiotherapy modalities on improving their ROM and muscle strength.
